Connecting with our Community

Spiritual Emphasis Week

Spiritual Emphasis Week is a week-long exercise in spiritual growth.  It is our prayer that during these five days, the staff and students of JCS will build community, connect with our Lord and each other, grow in relationship with our Lord and each other, and deepen our faith commitment.

During this week, one day is devoted to service work in the community.  The entire student body travels to more than 20 sites including nursing homes, thrift stores, day care centers, community gardens, and other agencies.  Students are encouraged to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community.

Service Opportunities

In the Spring, many of our middle school classes have the opportunity to go out into our community and the Grand Rapids area to serve others. Seveth grade classes spend time putting flags on the graves of Veterans. They also spend time doing Spring yard work at school.  Our eighth graders have the unique opportunity to spend two and one-half days serving at various Christian agencies in downtown Grand Rapids.  Through these experiences, students are challenged to step out of their comfort zone and share the love of Christ to those in need.

Running in the Community

Jenison Christian students in grades two through five are invited to join the school running club. Students are encouraged to run because God blessed us with bodies that move, to see God’s World alive in action, set and attain a goal, promote a healthy lifestyle, build community, and because it is FUN! The goal of the running club is to run in the Jenison Memorial Day 5K put on by Kenowa AMBUCS which is an organization that creates mobility and independence for people with disabilities.  JCS students are eligible to receive services through AMBUCS.

Guatemala Partnership

JCS is a host school for an organization that brings students from Guatemala to visit for a two-month experience in the fall each year in middle school. This allows for our students to learn more about another culture while sharing our own with others. We experience unique opportunities in our Spanish class with a presentation on Guatemala and a meal presented by the visiting students. These students stay for two months and become part of our JCS family. It is our hope that students exchange cultural experiences learning how to bring Christ to the world.

South Korea Partnership

JCS is a host school for an organization that brings students from Korea to visit for a three month experience called winter camp. Students have also been hosted for an entire academic year. In these experiences, the visiting students also enjoy life with JCS families. We have been blessed to see Christ at work through this cultural experience.

Set Free Ministries

JCS is a partnering school with Set Free Ministries in their work with a school named God-Cares School in Kasensero, Uganda. So far, JCS has joined Set Free Ministries to lead a fundraiser at our local Culver's Restaurant the help build a new school and dormitory, taken up Christmas collections to improve life at God-Cares School campus, hosted a model classroom on our campus to demonstrate what student-life is like in Uganda, and we have been in prayer for both the Set Free Team that is at work in the God-Cares School community as well as for the many students there who we consider brothers and sisters in Christ.
