Pre-Kindergarten
Children Finding Their Stride as They Take Their First School Steps
Jenison Christian's pre-kindergarten is a learning environment, similar to kindergarten, for children who are five years old but not quite ready for a regular kindergarten class. It's an environment where a child's physical, spiritual, emotional, social and intellectual abilities develop at a comfortable pace. At JCS, those children who need just a bit more time to mature, find their place in the activity oriented pre-kindergarten class where the emphasis is on introduction over mastery.
Physical Steps
Children have the opportunity to develop their fine motor skills by doing puzzles, working with crayons and paint brushes, and through a variety of creative projects. They also enjoy the activity and excitement of music and gym.
Social Steps
Students spend time together playing, talking, learning to listen to others, sharing and taking turns. Children are invited to school assemblies where they interact with other JCS students. They learn the routine of school and are given responsibility for various classroom jobs.
Emotional Steps
Walking with God is a lifelong journey. At JCS, it is a key component of the curriculum. Our Savior Jesus Christ walks through this journey with us, and throughout JCS curriculum children begin to experience the joy of this relationship.
Intellectual Steps
We use math throughout our lives in a number of ways each day. Pre-k students learn math from this same approach. Counting and learning numbers get children on the right track.
The joy of reading comes from letting imaginations run free as letters and sounds are learned. Children listen to stories and use a program called Zoo- Phonics to begin their introduction to reading. The children also have the opportunity to use the school's library.
Science is taught through Zoo-Phonics as well as through computers, projects, and show and tell. This big world in which we live offers plenty of opportunities to begin to learn about science and its impact on our lives.
