Bible
Fifth and sixth grade Bible approaches the whole of the Old Testament, focusing in particular on God’s faithfulness to His people throughout. Students encounter Bible stories in their geographical, historical and cultural context. In seventh and eighth grade, students focus on the New Testament and the life and teaching of Jesus. In eighth grade, students study the development of the early church and how it spread through the missionary work of Paul and other missionaries.
Literacy
In fifth grade, we use Bookworms as a reading and writing curriculum with research-based practices aligned to the Science of Reading to help students improve their reading and writing skills. We expose students to a high volume of full-length, deeply engaging books to build knowledge.
Our focus in sixth through eighth grade literacy is to develop skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners so students can use those skills to be agents of light in God’s world. We read novels of various types, give speeches, and write a variety of styles with the main objectives of learning how to read, write, and present in a way that brings glory to our God.
Math
In fifth grade, we build a deep understanding of math through an inquiry-based math curriculum Math Expressions. Our students make sense of math by exploring, discussing, and demonstrating their understanding of key concepts and are provided opportunities to look deeper at the problems they are solving and choose their own path to answers.
In sixth through eighth grade, we use the Big Ideas curriculum as a guide to help students develop understanding and critical thinking about various math concepts. We encourage students to make instructional connections that enhance their deeper-level understanding of mathematics and its relevance. We offer algebra and geometry classes for high school credit for students ready for those courses.
Science
Students explore God’s creation and build wonder through inquiry-based learning using the FOSS Next Generation science curriculum, which aligns to the Next Generation Science Standards. The students participate in authentic scientific investigation through which they analyze data to build knowledge about scientific concepts. Students actively form and reform ideas to better understand the world that God created.
Social Studies
Using the TCI History Alive! Curriculum as our guide and through the lens of history, students gain insights into God’s story and learn about themselves, humanity, and their role in the world over time.
Special Courses
Each week students' learning is enriched with special classes that include physical education, band and choir, Spanish, and art.
