Jenison Christian students in grades 2nd-5th are invited to join the school running club. Students are encouraged to run because God blessed us with bodies that move. Students learn to set and attain a goal, promote a healthy lifestyle, and build community. The goal of the running club is to run in the Jenison Memorial Day 5K race sponsored by Kenowa AMBUCS, an organization that promotes mobility and independence for people with disabilities.
Students in grades 2nd-8th grade who have an interest in the game of chess are invited to be a part of Chess Club. The club meets every Thursday after school during the winter months from 3:30 to 4:30. Every session opens with devotions and then a lesson on chess strategies taught by area high school students who are passionate about chess. Students then have a chance to practice the skills learned. Coaches are available during play to critique games. All members of the club are encouraged to enter a regional chess competition in early spring.
Geography Club is an after-school club opportunity for 4th-8th grade students who want to have fun while learning about God’s beautiful world. We use the National Geographic GeoBee materials. Check out their website: https://www.nationalgeographic.org/education/student-experiences/geobee/. Geography Club goes for 6 weeks, meeting in the Middle school library from 3:25 to 4:30. The day of the week changes each year, depending on sport schedules and other factors. For the first four weeks, we spend our time playing games, filling in maps, quizzing each other, and learning as much as possible about our world. The final two weeks are competition! Everyone participates in the preliminary round during week 5, and the top 10 students move on to the finals. Our top winner from the finals' competition takes an online test, and hopefully moves on to compete at the state level. Geography Club connects our small community, to each other and to the world. Watch for information in the fall about signing up!
Robotics Club is an after school club opportunity for students in 5th-8th grade who want to have fun while learning how to program robots to race, to sense color/light, and many other fun tasks. The club meets on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00PM. Robotics runs from the end of September through the beginning of March.
Jenison Christian partners with Allendale Christian to provide a ski club for students in 6th-8th grade. Being a part of the ski club gives students a reduced rate on ski rentals and lift tickets and even a free ski lesson. The club skis at Bittersweet Ski Resort in Otsego, MI. For a small fee, round trip transportation is provided 4-6 times during the season depending on road conditions and snow accumulation. It is a great opportunity for students to get a taste for a popular winter sport and get to know students from another feeder school. Discount tickets are also available to any JCS family interested.
